Jess Pierce produces Riesling in Salem Oregon at Walter Scott Winery. The grapes are sourced from Van Horn Vineyard in the amazing Columbia Gorge AVA. This Riesling is dry, delicious, and made without superfluous intervention. Drink it!
Jess Pierce founded Pierce Wines in 2017. Jess was first introduced to wine while slinging Cabernet in Southern Louisiana's fine dining steakhouses. There were a just few bottles on the list from Oregon, but those wines tasted like nothing she had experience before. After completing her undergraduate degree, Jess moved to Portland where she began her journey in the Willamette Valley. She got her foot in the door of the Oregon wine industry at Domaine Serene in 2007.
While simultaneously working in tasting rooms, cellars, and restaurants, Jess segued from the white linen atmosphere of the fine dining restaurants when she met Chef Jason French. Her life took an extraordinary turn when she helped Chef French launch his restaurant, Ned Ludd- and took the position as first General Manager and Sommelier. Jess received an advanced education in hospitality while learning how to make wine and food approachable from French and his bucolic incubator disguised as a restaurant.
To further expand her views on the interdisciplinary nature of food and wine, Jess left Oregon for Italy to pursue a Masters degree in Food Culture and Communications focusing on Human Ecology and Sustainability from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Piedmont. After graduating in 2012, Jess moved to Germany to intern with world-renown Mosel Valley Riesling producer Dr. Loosen. She remained in Germany to document the cultural landscape of the Mosel Valley and work the 2013 harvest with Weingut Selbach-Oster.
With her new skills and perspective, Jess returned to Oregon where she worked at Brooks Winery in Amity, Oregon for Janie Brooks Heuck. There she led the charge for wine education with a focus on Riesling.
In early 2017, Jess began working with Walter Scott Wines and was able to further broadened her perspective of the wine industry. Under the guidance of Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon, Jess was able to start Pierce Wines in the cellar at their winery. The small team at Walter Scott has an all hands on deck approach to the wine business and Jess wears many different hats, allowing her learn expand her knowledge every day.
In addition to her Master’s, Jess holds a diploma from the International Sommeliers Guild and a BA from Louisiana State University in her hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jess is also a Certified Sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers and has received her WSET Level 3 award. Jess has served on the Willamette Valley Winery Association and Eola-Amity Hills Winegrowers Association Marketing Committees, the IPNC Program Committee, and 9 years as a Sommelier at the International Pinot Noir Celebration.
Jess is currently an adjunct professor in Linfield College’s Wine Studies program in addition to her role at Walter Scott. She is married to her very supportive, beer slinging husband, Wade Fauth, and they live in Portland, Oregon.
